Literature has always provided composers with an abundant source of inspiration throughout the ages.
The second half of this program is inspired by Virgil's Aeneid, the subject of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, a widely-known tale in Europe at the time, while the first half has its roots in Shakespeare's exhilarating A Midsummer Night’s Dream. From this semi-fantasy opera, The English Concert creates a suite of movements that bring life to Love, Nature and, of course, magic.
