The English Concert return to the 2016 Buxton Festival with Handel’s psychological thriller Tamerlano under guest director Laurence Cummings.
Having learned that her beloved Andronico is betrothed to Irene, and that she must instead marry her captor Tamerlano, Asteria (Marie Lys) sings of her despair.
“Musical values are equally high in Francis Matthews’s production of Handel’s Tamerlano. As Laurence Cummings and the English Concert dance, lilt and languish in the pit, the cast throw off Handel’s vocal fireworks with an ease that borders on nonchalance.” – The Spectator
“In the pit, Laurence Cummings draws mellifluous sounds from the English Concert.” – The Guardian
