Sally Matthews is recognized as one of the foremost lyric sopranos of her generation, with an international career spanning opera, concert, and recital stages. She has collaborated with many of the world’s leading artists and conductors.

Sally has performed a wide range of operatic roles at major houses worldwide. Her repertoire includes Tatjana in Eugene Onegin at Norwegian National Opera and La Monnaie, Brussels; Blanche de la Force in Dialogues des Carmélites at Glyndebourne Festival and the Bayerische Staatsoper; the title roles in Rusalka at Glyndebourne and Jenůfa at the Wiener Staatsoper; and Countess Madeleine in Capriccio at La Monnaie. Other notable roles include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Wiener Staatsoper, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and the title role in the world premiere of Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Sally has also appeared in The Exterminating Angel by Thomas Adès, a role she premiered at the Salzburg Festival and reprised at the Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden.

On the concert platform, Sally has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. She has worked with renowned conductors such as Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Simone Young, Franz Welser-Möst, and Daniel Harding, as well as the late Sir Charles Mackerras and Bernard Haitink. Her concert repertoire includes Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, and Britten’s War Requiem. She has also performed Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes in concert with Sir Antonio Pappano and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, as well as at the Brisbane Festival.

Sally is a dedicated recitalist and has appeared at prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Carnegie Hall, New York, where she made her debut with Thomas Adès at the piano. She has released a recital disc with Malcolm Martineau and frequently collaborates with Simon Lepper.

A former winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award, Sally was part of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists Scheme and a participant in the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Throughout her career, she has performed regularly at leading opera houses, including the Bayerische Staatsoper, Dutch National Opera, Theater an der Wien, and the Glyndebourne Festival.
