Alexander’s Feast tells the tale of a banquet held by Alexander the Great, during which the famous Theban musician Timotheus sings and plays his lyre. The libretto is based on the ode Alexander’s Feast, or the Power of Music, by John Dryden, England’s first poet laureate.
