Trevor has chosen his recording of Haydn’s Nelson Mass.

“I think an ideal choice would be the Haydn Nelson Mass, or as he called it “Missa in angustiis” – Mass in straightened times.

We recorded this in 1986. It marked our first venture with The English Concert Choir.

There was a great sense of excitement and shared endeavour in the recording sessions and I remember feeling how very ‘modern’ and present Haydn’s music is.

His energy transcends centuries and the music speaks to us as if freshly composed this morning.”

Trevor Pinnock will direct The English Concert in Haydn’s Nelson Mass on 9 September at the Anima Mundi Festival of Sacred Music in Pisa.
