With their unconventional instrumentations and the inventive manner in which they relate soloists and ensemble, J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos essentially redefined the Baroque concerto.
The Brandenburg Concertos have been interpreted as Bach’s commentary on his contemporary social order. From the first concerto, with its spirited horn and oboe parts, through the third with its effervescent string writing to the sixth, which foregrounds the often undercelebrated viola, Bach’s music renders a series of visions of harmonious democracy.
The English Concert is delighted to partner with the acclaimed French harpsichordist Jean Rondeau, for performances at Bath Abbey and Wigmore Hall, featuring three of the Brandenburg Concertos, alongside a recreation of the Concerto for Two Oboes (after BWV 42 & 249).
With The English Concert’s principal wind and string players as soloists, these are sure to be performances that will allow Bach’s music to sound as fresh and relevant as ever.
