Between serving his musical apprenticeship in Hamburg and making his name in London, Handel spent almost three years in Italy, where he was exposed to the latest compositional and vocal techniques — and also quickly acquired a remarkable affinity at setting the Italian language to music. Led by The English Concert’s musical director Harry Bicket, Lucy Crowe gives an intimate recital featuring some of Handel’s finest Italian-texted music, including the dramatic cantata Armida abbandonata (HWV 105), interpolated with a number of his most original instrumental works.
